Martin Stopford

Dr Martin Stopford obtained a degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University in 1969 and went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from London University. In 1971 he joined the London based shipping consultants Maritime Transport Research working on a range of research and consultancy activities, including commodity studies, shipping market analysis, computer modelling and data processing. 
He joined British Shipbuilders as Group Economist in 1977 and was appointed Director of Business Development 1981, responsible for Corporate Planning, capital expenditure, financial forecasting and statistical services.
For 2 years at the end of the 1980s he was the Global Shipping Economist for Chase Manhattan Bank, London before joining H Clarkson as a Director in 1990. He served as the Managing Director of Clarkson Research Studies Ltd until 2013 when he was appointed President.
Martin is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Shipping Trade and Finance, City University Business School and the author of one of the most successful of maritime text books: "Maritime Economics".
Martin has been a guest lecturer for METL since its creation in 2002.
